Our towns and cities are an explosion of simple shapes combined into complex structures. Walking through them in the early morning or late evening, when the bustle of the working day is gone, they become deserted worlds and take on a different atmosphere. In the absence of people, the streetlights, signs, post boxes and other street furniture acquire a new character, as if they have become stand-ins for the missing human presence.
Based on my snapshots from early mornings, late evenings or foggy days, my recent work has concentrated on the built environment in Wellingborough, Kettering and other towns. My paintings, drawings and digital work present some of the unworldly atmospheres I find in the most banal and overlooked “nowhere” places that I come across in these towns.
