My initial interests have always been the manipulation of materials and exploring the possible combinations, layering, revealing and re-working surfaces, casting materials and the exploration of instillation as well as stand alone pieces such as those with painterly qualities.
My materials, like the colour pallet are limited however, this restriction draws attention to the various techniques, surfaces, texture and forms emphassising responsivenenss to light and shadow. Often without an obvious image the work aims to evoke a sense of stillness and inner awareness; a questioning of sorts; an inner contemplation.
The underpinning need for creating such work stems from my deep personal inner space questioning my context within the world whilst living with a complex set of illnesses and particular conditions. The mental capacity required (for me) needs a certain stillness and calmness enabling honest thinking which often overflows into the creative process in the form of certain words or phrases, not unlike a mantra.
